We are in a period of waiting. We are waiting to see what will happen to the economy of the country - will our incomes increase anytime soon? We are waiting for the referenda in Scotland and on the E.U. What effect will each have on England's relationship to our neighbours - in the north and across the channel? If politics is of no interest, are we waiting longingly for warmer weather, for Norwich City to win away or the election of the next Pope?

How about waiting for God? Easter is a time when we celebrate Jesus dying so that our sins might be forgiven and rising again that we might have new life with God. But we are not there yet - Easter is the last day of this month. For now, we are still waiting in unpredictable Spring weather and with an unsure political and economic future. Wouldn't it just be good if all of that uncertainty was over - including that God would show us the right way to follow more clearly?

Jesus himself was no stranger to waiting. He worked as a general builder and carpenter until he was at least 30 before his ultimate ministry began. Even then he withdrew to the desert for forty days and nights, where he fasted and prayed, before going out to teach and preach throughout Israel. Why not just get on with it? Hadn’t he known what his Father wanted him to do all his life? The personal character formation that comes from waiting is an ongoing story throughout the Bible as it is in our own lives. If even Jesus needed the discipline of choosing to delay until the time was right - maybe we need to learn to wait too. So let’s dwell in the moment and not long for tomorrow. As we wait, let’s spend some time asking Jesus how he might transform us to be patient while whatever we are waiting for is still coming and that it will arrive in his good time and not ours.

Grace be with you,
